[02/03, 8:23 pm] Dur Muhammad Pathan: A legend of Sindhian History Dur Mohammed Pathan Asif raza morio The intellectually literal persona of Dr. Mohammad Pathan is matchless and indistinctive to us in profuse greetings being a doctor of Sindhi Literature, academic, creative writer, critic, historian, reviewer, columnist, poet, storyteller, intellectual etc. He has written more than twenty five books on civilization, culture, theology, folk literature, general history, children's literature, biography and many other topics. Thousands of his articles have been adorned with various newspapers, magazines and periodicals which have been seen ever-increasing with each new day. All these proud achievements are credible and worthwhile in their place, but the exclusive reason made him giant and sheltered soul for all is establishing the prestigious "Gul Hayat Institution". Dr. Sahib's family has been living in Khair Mohammad Arijo city for more than a century. Most males in this family unit do folk-related tasks, one being "blacksmith", the other "teacher's job" and the third is "domestic animal’s medication". The practice of writing amulets for psycho-therapical wellbeing of social disorders among poor villagers was also familiar from generations in this family. His great grandfather, grandfather, father and uncles kept the said practices connected for the rest of their lives. None of them made material goods, neither property nor land or chattels, but kept freshening with dignity and honor to their children by enlightening them with education, character and skills. Dr. Sahib's ancestors were originally from another village, Pherha Areja, positioned northeast of Larkano district, they later move around to different villages and settled in a township called Kothi Kalhora but stayed there for some time. Afterward they settled in Bakrani town where not seen their life beneficial they again migrated to Khair Mohammad Arija, a bordering perish in south where present generation of this cultured, laborious and learned family is still Is living. Dr. Sahib's grandfather Haji Khuda Bakhsh Pathan, had four sons named Noor Muhammad, Dur Muhammed, Habibullah and Gul Muhammed, of whom Gul Mohammad was father of Dr Sahib. After the death of his elder brother Gul Muhammed kept his name Dur Muhammed on his third son. Dr. Sahib's three uncles were engaged in homeopathy while Habibullah was also teacher in education department. Dr. Sahib's father worked with the blacksmith labor, but he adorned his four sons Shafi Mohammad, Sher Mohammad, Dur Muhammmed and Amir bakhsh with customized jewelry of schooling and all four became teachers in the education department, but Dr. Dur Muhammed on his own interest and progressive efforts led to a lot. Dr. Sahib was born on 25 May 1945 in Khair Mohammad Arija village. He obtained fifth class education from Girls Primary School Arija in 1953 and after receiving his matriculation from Government Pilot Secondary School Larkano, he passed all residual examinations as an external student. He administered the first-year and intermediate examinations at Sukkur centers, as during that time there has not been any centre for private and external students in Larkano. In 1969 he graduated. As there were no middle schools throughout that phase, but students who passed the matriculation were appointed as English teachers in primary schools under AP classes. In 1971, Dr sahib has passed B. Ed examination in First Class, First position, although in accordance with the rules of educational policies, External Students could not do B.Ed, but at that time Secretary education Mr. Esani was a good hearted man who sanctioned an order that Like regular students, external undergraduates could do BED. Dr. Sahib did his MA in 1972 in which he secured first class third position. In 1979, he grossed a Ph.D in Sindhi literature from Sindh University Jamshoro, entitled "Literary History of Karachi" while his Supervisor was Dr. Ghulam Ali Allana Sahib. The doctor Pathan obtained the job of an English teacher in 1964, while his first posting was at Aitbar Chandio Village School. On 13 November 1973 he became a lecturer. He was promoted to Assistant Professor on May 29, 1985, ten days before he was selected as Assistant Director at the Institute of Sindhology where he afterward served as Director for a few months. He has been appointed an honorary consultant in Pakistan study center Jamshoro from 1989 to May 1990. From November 1991 to April 1995, he served as Principal of Government Science College Dokri where he has been associate Professor of Sindhi subject. On August 14, 2001, he became District Education Officer of Larkano, from where on March 1, 2003, he was appointed as a Principal in Government Degree College, Sukkur. In 2004, he was appointed Director of Literary and Non-Formal Basic Education, Sindh, after which he was chosen Principal of Government Degree College, Larkano, where he served until his retirement on May 24, 2005. Dr. Sahib is a heroic, spirited and hard working man, that's why retirement has not been seen as a complication to his recreation, persistence and pursuit of enterprise. That is why even after the end of government service different Institutions continue the struggle to have access for the services of this scholarly man of knowledge. In September 2005, he was appointed as Vice Principal at Cadet College Larkano, where he continued to serve up until October 2006. Later on he also employed as principal of SZABIST College Larkano from 2009 to February 2011. He also worked for one year in the Sindh Archives as Researcher and two years in Law Department as an Independent Translator, where he translated Acts passed in 10 years into Sindhi and Urdu languages. Dr. Sahib has been remained member of Intermediate, B.A and M.A certification teams for a choice of universities and boards. He is certified guide for M. Phil and Ph. D students in Pakistan Studies, History, Culture, Education, Sindhi subjects etc. at Sindh University Jamshoro, Shah Latif University Khairpur, Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad, Pakistan Study Center Jamshoro and various other educational institutions. He has supervised numerous scholars and students with M.Phil and Ph.D. In acknowledgment of his scholastic abilities Dr. Sahib is privileged to be honorary member of the Board of Governors of various educational institutions all over Pakistan, including Mirza Kalech Beg Chair, University of Sindh, Sindhi Adabi Board Jamshoro, Academic Counselors of Education Larkano at Board of Intermediate and Secondary education, Bilawal Research Institute Nawabshah, Cadet College Larkano, Board of Studies Shah Latif University Khairpur, Bazm-e-Taleb al-Mulla etc. Right through his life of service in the literary, teaching, administrative and research worlds, he earned vast distinctions, character and class, which was his right, and product of his labor as well. In recognition of his hard work, he has received numerous awards and honorary shields, most notably among those are, Adyoon Award (1984), Sindh Madarsa Silver Award (1985), Vice-Chancellors Award (1987), Pakistan Study Shield (1989), Hosh Mohammed Sheedi Shield (1991), Sindh Graduate Association Gold Medal (1992), Deploee Award (1992). , Talib-ul-mola Award (1993), Cadet College Shield (1994), Sheral Badahi Award (1995), Larkano Research Award (2001), Motherland Award (2002), Lifetime Achievement Award 2005 (Qalandar shahbaz Mela Committee). Life time achievement Award (Sachal Sarmast Memorial Committee) etc: In 2000, the American BIOGRAPHICAL INSTITUTE also awarded him “The 2000 MILLENNIUM MEDAL OF HONOR” to tribute Dr. Sahib's global rank of literary and research services. In admiration of his academic and literary services Institute of Archeology has placed "Dr. Dur Mohammed Pathan Corner" in their research library. Looking in the meadows of research and inventions around the world, Albert Pike reminds us that "almost all the good things in the world are created by poor people, poor researchers, poor professionals, poor laborers and skilled workers, poor philosophers, poor poets and wise people". One of the best things about the academic world in Sindh is the Gul Hayat Institute, whose innovation, consistence; stability and knowledge is also super headed by one of our poor teacher who has even more powerful thing called imagination as the knowledge is restricted, while imagination has the immeasurable propensity to encompass the whole universe. When Dr. Sahib left the Sindhology, he had left behind a very vibrant world of several years, so the conscientious psyche and diligent heart of this tough soul did not allowed the cows' day and night. Later he strongly-willed to find the treasure of history from the vestiges. Dr. Sahib is an excellent organizer who has created numerous literary, social and historical associations and institutions, of which the Sindh Historical Society, Larkano Historical Society, Sindhi Adbi Sangat, Shaheed Hoshi Mohammed Welfare Organization, Sindh Writers Welfare Gazetteer, Sachal Adbi markez etc, But the institution which became the cause of the fame of his passion and enthusiasm and to which Dr Sahib gave his blood and sweat to elevate is Gul Hayat Institute, which he founded in August 1990 in Khair Mohammad Arija township, keeping special purpose of research and promotion in the field of Literature, education, history and social interests. Dr Sahib's father was Gul Mohammad while Hayat khatoon was his mother whose name’s first letters he gave to his institution “Gul Hayat” which in turn proved most consecrated and blessed for him. His father himself was blacksmith who prepared all kinds of metallic tools and utensils at his shop located in Bakrani city, but the most imperative article he made was the education tool to his sons about which he had heard from the ancestors that "the pen is stronger than sword". In case of his third son Dr. Dur Mohammed Pathan, the sun he established is reducing the shadows of ignorance with the glows of knowledge, and I am sure that his planting will be beneficial, assisted and honored for our future generations. Dr. Sahib's opening watchword on the institution of Gul Hayat was, "Give me your junk and I will give you history in return". Around thirty years ago, in a remote rural culture of Sindh, this jingle was a plant of outlandish ideas, surrounded by distrustful dreams and suspicious feelings. A retired man, state of corruption, national indifference, lack of resources, vast family, inestimable responsibilities but the task of doing something better and blessed always torched his soul at every time of depression and misery. For a long time in the initial period, Dr. Sahib's younger brother, Amir Bakhsh Pathan, assisted him in obtaining, collecting and preserving material. His sons Mumtaz Pathan and Zahid Pathan also gave their precious time to support him, so did his grandson Mohsin Ali by being helping hand all the day nights. Dr. Pathan not only illuminated his parent’s name by establishing this institution but also kept his children busy and gave them an excellent manner to live in. This love and devotion of ordering historical literature for his national roots has made him a living legend in the Sindhian world of history and research. Though his labor has a potential to shine like a star of life but in order to find this position, he sacrificed countless time, precious months, years, days and nights of his life for planning, establishing, arrangements, permanence and stability of Gul Hayat Institution. Highly regarded name of Dr. Pathan and reputation of Gul Hayat institution continued interest for students, researchers and historians over all, while frequent investigative organizations such as Sindhology, Sindh Madarsul-Islam, Latif Chair Karachi University, National Book Council of Pakistan, Goethe Institute Karachi, Bureau of Curriculum Jamshoro, Sachal Chair Karachi University, Pakistan Academy of Letters, Radio Pakistan Karachi, Haiderabad, Larkano, Khairpur, Pakistan National Center Karachi and Larkano etc: are getting advantage in research support from the riches of Gul Hayat institute. There is a world of incalculable research papers on thousands of rare books, subjects, documents and manuscript reserved in Gul Hayat and each of those have a series of separate topics following it. Doctor Pathan has collected all kinds of subject material from 1843 till today and he divided it into twenty different corners or chairs to facilitate the readers by using very demanding task of scientific and technical methods. I surprise and have been surprising how this old lion has done it into such technical arrangement. Dr. Sahib has not confined Gul Hayat's treasures to the building only but also introduced it to the global class of cyber world, media and social media so that researchers from all over the orb earned with his labor of love. Dr Pathan also helped new researchers and students like me through phones, letters and emails who want to hunt for their destination in research and teaching fields. In addition, the website of Gul Hayat institution has provided plenty of material for pollsters and learners so as to achieving and increasing the knowledge of their wonderful past our present and future generation establish cordially affiliation based on the history of their region. People from all over the world also come to see and benefit from the treasures collected here, for whom Gul Hayat rarely becomes a guest house where there is also a kitchen, where most of the time there is a dinner for the guests arranged by Dr Sahib and infrequently he himself cooked the meal while every so often some guests also wills to serve the host. Hazrat Mohammad peace be upon him says that “the ink of scholars is more precious than the blood of martyrs". Perhaps this is why the learned nations of the globe construe their academic, cerebral and scholars as treasures who have high character, intellect and great spirit, so they live, think and act daringly. The intellectuals know that the interpretation of dreams cannot be achieved by magic tones, but for this one has to work hard with the heart, mind and good nerves to set the destination by disciplining with blood and sweat. Dr. Sahib's whole life is a prime model of the determination that he has made to learn and teach a habit that has deep-seated in his blood and sweat. This literary diviner who spends his valuable time, for us has now reduced the glow of eyes, by stolen the time of his beloved and relations, he devoted million moments of his own life, happiness and joy for documenting such a hard and huge record of our history from the rubbish garbage of newspapers and magazines for which many organizations and ages are insufficient to manage. This world is so amazing where even among most demanding nation like ours is, can be seen the historical and literary prophets like Dr Dur Mohammed Pathan, who has done everything that makes people nervous, uneasy and edgy even when they are thinking of doing it. Dr. Sahib has never been seen idle to transmit, pass on or broadcast for literary assistance to followers for any time, that’s why thirsty fellows or institutions continues to be irrigated from this sea source of knowledge. It is a strange fact about our people that administratively, governmentally and organizationally a nation which has always been collectively depressing attitude headed for history, there has been one man who collected entire region's history from refuse segments of our society and the work he has done was very uphill task even for any largest institution. Dr. Saheb has treasured it by loving everything in regards to knowledge, literature and history which we always rebuff to consider as an additional burden and downbeat product. In addition there is a tremendous collection of history unruffled in the form of the rarest photographs, numerous uncommon bookish treasures, which, upon seeing, one became devotee of the courage, hard work, passion and greatness of its creator. Seeing their hard work, determination and sober sense of Dr. Pathan who follow the footsteps of great men of all time I do not know where to put this man’s services in our time and what reward should be given to his employment of self devotion for cultural awareness toward our generations. The truth is that I myself am considered a giant as a writer in my own world, but after seeing Dr. Sahib's highlighter struggle; I feel that people like me are no more important than insects in front of this massive mountain. Let me give you an example of Dr. Sahib's hard, handy and headwork that, as far as the record of political parties is concerned and connected since British era, has been assembled as profiles in Gul Hayat Institute, included Sindh Sabha, Sindh Hindu Sabha, Sindh Bombay Provincial Conference, British Empire League, Sindh Provincial Conference, Home Roll League, Sindh Muslim League, Satyagraha Sabha, Sivadisi Sabha, Jamiat-ul-Ulema, Khilafat Committee, Amn Sabha, Anti non-cooperation Society, The National Service League, Swaraj Sabha, Sindh Swaraj Society, Sindh Zamindar Association, Upper Sindh Landowners Association, National Convention Club, Sindh Zamindars Sabha, Hari Party, Anti-Separation Committee, Sindh Azad conference, Sindh peoples Party, Sindh Azad Party, Indian National League, Sindh Progressive Party, Sindh Political Club, Sindh People's Congress Committee, Civil Liberties Union, Sindh United Party, Sindh Muslim Political Party, Sindh Labor Party, Sindh Socialist Party, Unionist Party, Khaksar Tahreek, All India Muslim League, Sindh Sagar Party. Muslim Nationists party, Sindh Balochistan Communist Party, Syasi Adab, Jeay Sindh, Jeay Sindh Komi Mahaz, Sindhi Hari Committee, Jeay Sindh Tahreek, Tarki Pasand Party, Pakistan People’s party, Pakistan Muslim League etc:, Profiles, summaries, sketches and reports of the leaders of all those political parties, various wings, office holders, their struggle, occurrences and activities while the period are grouped separately and exclusively in Gul Hayat. Dr. Sahib's eldest and ablest son, our friend Mumtaz Pathan, by donating pearls of history from well-informed sea of Gul Hayat enlightening us with a valuable, instructive, comprehensive and essential knowledge through newspapers and social media that I must read despite of my immense engagements. First Time I met this man of honor and salute, perhaps in February or March 1998 when I was launching my first Sindhi Magazine “Mohenjo Daro” and seek his article. His first time honor, greeting and reception purchased me forever and since then I have been allocated for service of his door and been going there on and off. He has sent me three Eid Cards on different occasions. He has also written my name on Editors list in Gul Hayat institution. I have also honor that Dr. Dur Muhammed Pathan on 10 March 2009, has written back Title of my Urdu book “Insan Irtka sy Beesween Sadi tak”, in his own hand writing which is also preserved by me a tribute. Some people know the plan of God about them and purpose of sending themselves on earth. Subsequently instead of putting their lives in the shackles of fear and anxiety; they begin to think of it as a way to find their purpose, objective and destination, to which their enthusiasm catch before long. He is one of the matching kinds of people who have done their obligation in the world after doing their part as a human and nation. Dr. Sahib believes that "in developed countries their nations have three eyes, one of which is used to look at the past, second come across present, while the third eye notices future. However not only our nations these eyes are feeble but memory is also very fragile. So to join the ranks of urbanized nations, not only our three eyes be safe and sound, but our future can only be improved if we get lessons from our past and strive to improve the present”. Individually Dr. Sahib has not only three eyes but has fourth intellectual eye also. Employing all his visions Dr. Pathan has collected an inclusive record of the combined process and reaction of our nation's literature, morals, sociology, civilization and politics in Gul Hayat so that our future generations will not only benefit from it but determine their respective destinies. Government in some way should adopt, assume and approve this labor of love, make it a big institution in Larkano by the name of Dr. Dur Mohammed Pathan or nationalize this historical treasury in the same building, because now it’s not only Dr. Pathan but with his collected wisdom of billions books, leaf, pieces of papers and folios can be added our country's combined historical background in most intricate way of collecting hundreds of the books, but also a powerful and innovative research platform can be added for our next generation that will help to quench the thirst of knowledge for centuries. Government with our nation should have to pay gratitude, appreciation and thanks to Dr. Pathan because of the hard work he has been done giving his sweat and blood to unite our history in this crucial time of the national crisis where we, collectively and individually are engaged in slavery parties, wandering here and there for our small desires. When our nation, country, race and relations were following political thieves, national burglars, communal thugs and disloyal traders and wasting their precious time spreading duplicity, sedition subversion and were busy in pulling each other’s legs. When we are wandering around in national restlessness and communal ignorance, there is a single man giving birth to the talent of implant the roots of national interests into earth. Just a Single man, is boring manners of love In stone hearted people, watering with entreats and prays into bloody fields of our barren souls for keeping our culture, literature and civilization fertile, fresh and live. For protecting our broken history he has devoted enormous nighttimes so that his eyes are now swollen. He spoke so much for us that he has a sore throat and has written hundreds of volumes for us hat his holy hands are now tired, but despite wrapping sleepiness, exhaustion and drowsiness of centuries to his mature survival, he is still fighting on his free will for us on many fronts. His all these rounds are not personal demanding rather he believes in sacred task of bargaining with our hearts, and by keeping himself busy is fixing for our generations culturally, academically, literary, culturally and historically for liability and arrears by giving them his admirable time bank. Moreover, this all he has done is not only to pay off debt for his soil but to liberate his nation from the slavery of ignorance.
